Becoming Feyi Dee: Never Disqualify Yourself Before You Get Heard
"Always improve yourself, learn new skills, do something that makes you better than you were yesterday, and have an open mind because inspiration is all around."
Many talented artists are either born into a musical family or pick an interest in music at a very early age. Feyi’s passion for singing was born in her late 20s, when she joined the choir for the first time. Feyi was exposed to and groomed in the art of not only singing, but also songwriting during her time as a chorister. However, she did not fully come to terms with sharing her songs with the world until 2019. Our expectations of ourselves can often inhibit the accurate measure of our abilities. When we expect ourselves to not meet the bar of excellence set in our minds, we fail to recognize our strengths present to meet and even exceed this bar. Our capabilities thus remain untapped because we entertain thoughts of inadequacy. The opinions or perceptions of people around us that we are not enough, or cannot meet up to standards of excellence set before us, can fuel this feeling of inadequacy. Feyi had compared herself to well-known artists and thought she could not sing as well as they did. However, Feyi Dee broke out of this mindset of inadequacy in terms of becoming an artist, when she exposed herself to a lifestyle of learning and an atmosphere of positive encouragement.
Her debut, “Just As I Am” , was inspired by Feyi’s realization that God does not call the qualified but qualifies the called. “Just As I Am” became a confirmation that despite Feyi’s insecurities, God sees Feyi just as she is. In spite of our shortcomings, God still entrusts us with tasks, which other people are more qualified to do. God never abandons us after entrusting us with such tasks, but equips us with the essential ammunition for an excellent performance. Feyi encourages us to always improve ourselves, learn new skills, do something that makes you better than you were yesterday, and have an open mind because inspiration is all around.
