The Heart of Tehillah Spontaneous Worship

Tehillah is an intimate form of praise involving new songs, singing from the Spirit, or spontaneous declarations of who God is and what God has done (Purdy, 2019). These songs spring forth while engrossed in worship of God. Tehillah is one of the Hebrew characterizations of praise and occurs 57 times in the old testament (See Bible Hub). Tehillah is a praise from God. God initiates Tehillah in His worshippers. Psalm 22:25 and Isaiah 61:11 express God as the source and initiator of praise (Tehillah). Psalm 40:3 says,

“And He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise (Tehillah) to our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”

Tehillah is one Hebrew praise word strongly knitted with the presence and identity of God (Phillips, 2019). Deuteronomy 10:21 and Jeremiah 17:14 embody God as Tehillah. Psalm 22:3 acknowledges God’s presence and reign in the praises (Tehillah) of Israel.

"You must fear the Lord your God. You must serve Him and cling to Him, and swear by His name. He is your praise (Tehillah), and He is your God, who has done for you these great and fearsome things which your eyes have seen." (Deuteronomy 10:21)

“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, For You are my praise (Tehillah).” (Jeremiah 17:14)

Tehillah is described in the New Testament in Ephesians 5:19 as psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, and in 1 Corinthians 14:15 as singing with the Spirit.

“Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19).

God invites worshippers to come into His presence with tehillah and continually express this praise form of worship in Psalm 100:4, Psalm 34:1, and Psalm 35:28. Isaiah 43:21 says, “These people I have formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise (Tehillah).”

With this understanding of tehillah, the Tehillah Spontaneous Worship series is born. Sonia Martins, a.k.a. Smartmusique establishes this series as a platform to express unrehearsed praise from the Spirt with a heart of worship. The first episode of Tehillah Spontaneous Worship takes place online on August 15, 2021 at 5pm MDT.
