The Heart of Tehillah Spontaneous Worship

Image
T ehillah is an intimate form of praise involving new songs, singing from the Spirit, or spontaneous declarations of who God is and what God has done ( Purdy, 2019 ). These songs spring forth while engrossed in worship of God. Tehillah is one of the Hebrew characterizations of praise and occurs 57 times in the old testament ( See Bible Hub ). Tehillah is a praise from God. God initiates Tehillah in His worshippers. Psalm 22:25 and Isaiah 61:11 express God as the source and initiator of praise ( Tehillah ). Psalm 40:3 says, “And He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise ( Tehillah ) to our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”   Tehillah is one Hebrew praise word strongly knitted with the presence and identity of God ( Phillips, 2019 ). Deuteronomy 10:21 and Jeremiah 17:14 embody God as Tehillah . Psalm 22:3 acknowledges God’s presence and reign in the praises ( Tehillah ) of Israel.  "You must fear the Lord your God. You must serve Him and ...

How You Love - Becoming Unstuck

Image
Sign along hiking path "I'm stuck! I can't climb down!! I can't climb up either!!!", I cried. Being stuck on that very steep part of the mountain was not a funny situation, even though I could not get the grin off my face. I could see the valley below and was terrified by the depth. I prayed gravity would be merciful and friction generous. My imagination ran wild. "If I slid down this slope, gravity could keep pulling me down all the way to the mountain's foot. If I slid down slowly, the stony ground would leave my back bruised. What if I grabbed on to the stones, and moved sideways until I get to the less sloping path I should have taken?" Once one of the stones gave way from the ground, I froze. I was stuck and none of the people I had gone hiking with knew how to get me down. "How did I get here?!", I reflected. I had forgotten the instruction to stay on the hike trail. I intended taking pictures of the valley below, and the view fr...

A Song's Journey - How You Love by Sonia Martins

Image
How You Love is a song by Sonia Martins a.k.a smartmusique. Although composed and written in collaboration with Kunle Ben and Divine Oribhabor, Sonia Martins initially composed the melody of the chorus and a good portion of the final lyrics, as a personal reflection of God's amazing love for her. Sonia was inspired to sing the chorus while doing the dishes in her home in January 2017. The kitchen is not an unusual place of song inspiration for Sonia, as she confesses to have other original songs initially composed in the kitchen. Something about the soap lathering as the sponge moves over the dish's surface or the coolness which the water brings to Sonia's hands sets her heart to worship or express her thoughts in songs.  The kitchen chrous had been left, almost forgotten, in Sonia's files of spontaneous voice recordings until late in January 2020. As if the heavens could no longer watch the song's potential waste away, the chorus popped back in Sonia's head an...
